The expressions a man has before and after he becomes a father show an incredible amount of emotion etched into their face.

That is what this photographer was aiming to capture while at the maternity ward at University Hospital Lewisham

Over the course of 72 hours, Tom Oldman, who usually works as a celebrity photographer, captured the moments shortly before and after they became dads.

The before images all show the nerves and tension on their faces as they wait, followed by the joyous and relieved smile when they have seen their child.

One of the people photographed was Toan Lam, a 34-year-old manager from New Cross who was also born in University Hospital Lewisham.

He said: “When my son was born, my outlook on life changed instantly and I knew I would need to be there every step of the way to see him grow.

“Becoming responsible for another human being is the most surreal experience; I can’t quite put it into words but I hope the portraits convey the magnitude of this feeling.”

The reason behind this photography exhibition is a slightly odd publicity stunt by Playstation to promote their new God of War game, which comes out April 20.

It’s a very tenuous link as the games are about an angry man killing ancient gods, but the latest game has a strong parental theme running through it so that’s the idea.

Tracy Thomas, lead midwife at University Hospital Lewisham’s birth centre, said: “When PlayStation asked if they could photograph dads-to-be in our Birth Centre, I immediately said yes.

“Having a child is a joint effort but sometimes, dads may be overlooked and they are left feeling less confident.

“Every day I see the change that men from all walks of life experience and I hope that the portraits encapsulate this incredible transformation.”

At time of writing, none of the parents have decided to name their child Kratos.
