Passengers were stuck on a train for more than three hours after it broke down outside Lewisham station.

The Southeastern train broke down shortly before 10am today (April 5) between New Cross and Lewisham, with passengers describing the situation as “beyond frustration”.

One passenger tweeted at Southeastern: “If the line is bust can’t you assist passengers off the train? Lewisham station is literally 100 meters away. This is beyond frustrating.”

Southeastern explained that would require turning off the power to every other line as well, something that the train company had to do when passengers fled trains during the Beast from the East snow storm last month.

An independent investigation has been launched for that case with passengers describing the “absolute torture” of being stuck in the trains for up to five hours with broken toilets and no power.

Some of the people stuck on today’s train were also on the infamous stranded carriages on March 2. Jayendra Sevani tweeted: “This train has no toilet, just like in March. Half term, lots of kids on this train.”

The faulty train left people stuck near St John’s for up to three hours before a rescue train arrived to save the stranded passengers.

Robin Pope had left Eltham at 10.09am to travel into work but when he spoke to News Shopper at 1.40pm, he was still stuck on the broken down train.

He said: "They pulled up a train alongside our one. They have this little bridge between the trains to get us off.

"It's very calm on board. The driver repeated about a million times to stay on the train. He obviously didn't want people to jump off the train."

Southeastern said that once the train arrived in Lewisham there wias staff with refreshments and there to offer any assistance.

The stranded train has left major disruption on all lines to and from London Bridge up until 4pm. The power was only turned back on the lines at around 3pm.
