A commemorative service to remember the 14 people killed in four terror attacks in London last year is due to be held today – a year after the Westminster attack.

One year ago today, heroic police officer PC Keith Palmer died from his injuries after challenging Dartford-born Khalid Masood, who stabbed PC Palmer after having driven a car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge.

MPs in the Houses of Parliament will observe a minute’s silence today to remember the victims of last year’s attacks.

More tributes to PC Palmer have been given on the anniversary of his death, with a friend describing him as "a proud and courageous police officer who did his job and never wanted any fuss".

PC Shaun Cartwright’s tribute, issued through Scotland Yard, continued: "Keith loved being a police officer, he just wanted to help people and do his best.

"Keith was always happy, always the first to help anyone out, first in to work and the last one out.

"He was a proud and courageous police officer who did his job and never wanted any fuss or to be the centre of attention.

"Keith was a true and loyal friend, utterly reliable.

"Most of all I will remember him as a family man who idolised his wife, daughter and his family; they're the important ones that I think about a year on from the Westminster attack."

Senior officers are expected to attend a number of private memorial services on Thursday to mark the first anniversary of the atrocity, but the force has not made details public.

PC Palmer's name will be one of 1,400 inscribed on the new UK Police Memorial being built in Staffordshire, commemorating officers who were killed on duty.

The message #LondonUnited will be displayed at four locations today "as an act of solidarity".

London Bridge, Finsbury Park Mosque, Parsons Green underground station, and the Houses of Parliament will have the phrase displayed on them overnight.

The four terror attacks which shook London to the core last year:

March 22: Five people died in Westminster after Khalid Masood drove his car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge at around 70mph before stabbing unarmed police officer Keith Palmer. Masood died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

June 3: Eight people died when three Muslim extremists drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge before continuing into Borough Market to launch a knife attack. The three attackers were all shot dead.

June 19: Darren Osborne drove a van into a group of worshippers who were leaving Finsbury Park Mosque, killing Makram Ali, 51, and injuring nine other people. Osborne received a life sentence for the attack.

September 15: A homemade explosive device partially explodes on a packed District Line tube at Parsons Green Station, injuring around 50 people. Ahmed Hassan, 18, from Iraq was found guilty of attempted murder.
