The people of Lewisham have been rallying support, hanging up their flags and counting down the hours until the borough enters the final match.

So far in the 'World Cup of London boroughs', Lewisham has pushed past Southwark, Camden, Hackney and Islington to reach the final.

Now people are planning to get together in the pub for the last few hours of the final match against Lambeth to celebrate victory – or drown their sorrows in defeat.

Although their most difficult match may have been in the very first round, as avid follower of the competition Barney Williams explained.

“We had just a couple pulled in for the first round, we beat Southwark by seven votes in the end,” he said.

Barney, from Crofton Park, is one of the many people from Lewisham who have been avidly following the competition on Twitter.

Hugo Marrow runs the World Cup of London boroughs Twitter account and said he has been shocked at how much it has taken off.

Speaking to News Shopper, he said: “It has absolutely taken me by surprise. I never expect it might be this popular at all.

“All four of the semi-finalists, all of them got really into it, as well as other boroughs like Ealing and Southwark.”

Nicola Johnson is one of the many people who has gotten into the competition and she is meeting up with other campaigners at the pub for the final few hours.

She said: “I’m delighted that Lewisham has made it through to the final of the World Cup of London Boroughs and have enjoyed the enthusiasm, camaraderie and friendly rivalry shown by fellow Lewisham borough Twitter accounts during the tournament, particularly the nail-biting semi-final against Islington.

“A few of us Lewisham folk who have connected through banter on Twitter during the tournament are hoping to organise a get-together in a local pub – the Catford Constitutional Club - for those final two hours.”

It looked like it was going to be an epic final between the sister boroughs of Greenwich and Lewisham, but at the last minute Lambeth pulled ahead to take a shock victory into the final.

This has made Hugo, who was otherwise certain Lewisham would pull ahead due to their overwhelming support, unsure who would win. “Lambeth managed to pull it back so you never know,” he said.

With MPs Vicky Foxcroft for Lewisham and Chuka Umunna in Lambeth both retweeting the polls to try gather support, it looks set for an epic final showdown.

Barney will be heading down to the pub for the final as well, and admitted he didn’t even know the names of his fellow Lewisham campaigners on Twitter.

He said: “We are going to get the Lewisham flag from the council next door and fly it there. After last night who knows what to expect from Lambeth.”

The final poll goes up at 8pm today (March 21) and ends 24 hours later at the "World" Cup of London Boroughs Twitter account.
