Bexley Council has announced plans to build houses on an old car park in Abbey Wood.

BexleyCo, the council's development company, will work with Peabody to build in Felixstowe Road, near Abbey Wood Station.

The development will, according to the council, include affordable housing and developments to Harrow Manorway.

Network Rail is currently using the site as an office, and before this it was a car park - which will be replaced with with an alternative.

The council’s cabinet member for regeneration and growth, councillor Linda Bailey said: “This is an exciting time for the Borough. We’ve set up BexleyCo to ensure residents benefit from growth in the area and that quality developments are delivered.

"We are confident that working with RIBA we will find an architect with the expertise and design skills necessary to deliver high quality accommodation for affordable housing and private sale at an affordable cost.”

Bexley Council announced a growth strategy at the end of last year that set out ambitious plans to increase housing.

The plans, which focus primarily in the north of Bexley, include a new neighbourhood in Belvedere, including up to 8,000 new homes and 3,500 jobs, and a potential new Crossrail station and extension of the DLR to Belvedere.

In Erith, the council's vision includes 6,000 homes and 2,000 jobs, while in Thamesmead there is scope for up to 4,000 homes and 5,000 jobs triggered by the Mayor's Housing Zone and a new Crossrail station.
