A Beckenham company has been punished after a scaffold clip fell 60ft through the air to land on a person's head.

The injured man suffered a broken nose and a severely bruised skull after being hit with the clip on 20 March last year when walking along Upper Street in Islington.

Alandale Plant & Scaffolding Ltd of Beckenham pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

The company was fined £160,000 and ordered to pay costs of £7,059.08 and a victim subcharge of £170.

HSE inspector Sarah Robinson commented: “This incident could so easily have been avoided by simply carrying out correct control measures and safe working practices.

“On this occasion the company did not follow their own risk assessments or method statements.”

The case was brought to Westminster Magistrates' Court after the Health and Safety Executive prosecuted the company.
