A dangerous driver who crashed into a pub with a police officer hanging out of his car has been jailed.

David Seal, of Peacock Street in Gravesend, was followed by Kent Police after he was seen driving erratically through Greenhithe in July last year.

The 32-year-old was eventually stopped in The Terrace, Gravesend, before he sped off with an officer halfway inside his VW Golf trying to remove his keys.

The reckless driver sped 50 metres down the road, crashing into parked cars before finally smashing into the City of London pub.

He was charged with assault, dangerous driving and driving without a licence and insurance.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Andrew Jobes said: "What was a typical police stop on a suspicious vehicle became much more serious when Seal reacted dangerously, driving away from the scene with little awareness for the safety of the officer who was partway inside his car.

"Fortunately no one was seriously hurt and Seal was detained immediately after crashing into the pub wall."

Seal pleaded guilty to all offences and was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court to 15 months in prison.

He will not be allowed to drive again until he passes an extended test, which cannot be taken for another two years.
