Have you ever wondered what a Deptford Discount is? Or if someone tells you to stop Welling, what they mean? We are here to help.

Town names often end up being used in slang that reflects the people from there or the reputation of the location, and it can be difficult to keep up.

Using the fine resource that is Urban Dictionary, alongside a healthy dose of editorial judgement (do not search what a Sidcup Slinger is), we collected what the slang for town names in south-east London is.

Bromley: To spend your time sleeping or laying down. Also shortened to bromerz or bromz. As in “hello good sir, why are you having a bromz here of all places”.

Deptford Discount: To obtain goods from a store without having paid for them. If someone tells you they got a Deptford Discount on their latest phone, they probably stole it.

Bexley: A form of cockney rhyming slang for 'chief'. As in Bexley -> Bexleyheath -> Chief. However depending on the age of the person saying it, it can also mean someone who is considered less cool than you.

Welling: A verb to mean someone is lying and failing. It originates not from the town, but from someone saying “well err” when they can’t think of a good lie. A person who is a ‘weller’ is someone who lies a lot and is bad at it. A weller in the act is ‘welling’.

Norwood: The term given to the patch of hair left as an island at the front of your head when a man has entered the latter balding stages. Someone with an especially grievous Norwood should consider shaving it off altogether.

Crayford: A compulsive liar. Different from someone who is ‘welling’ in that they don’t show obvious signs that they are lying, but their stories are so far-fetched that it is obvious that they aren’t true.

Abbey Wood: Used to describe the girl of their dreams. If your friend starts to describe a girl as his Abbey Wood, then you know they have fallen so completely in love that nothing you say will change their mind.

Crystal Palace: When someone takes moulds for ice lollies and…look, all we are saying is that if someone invites you over to their house for a Crystal Palace, do not take them up on that offer.
