Plans for a £125m upgrade for a busy stretch of the A2 near Dartford are set to be put to the public.

Proposals to upgrade the Bean and Ebbsfeet junctions on the A2 are being put forward by Highways England as part of a major improvement scheme.

The improvements to the A2 are part of a national £15billion investment ahead of significant growth in north Kent.

A spokesman for Highways England said: "The Kent Thameside area is predicted to see significant growth in the future. Around 15,000 homes and 30,000 jobs are expected to be created by the Ebbsfleet Development Corporation. Additional growth is underway in the Dartford area, with over 4,000 homes being built."

Highways England is proposing to keep the existing layout at the Bean junction, including the current roundabouts which would be enlarged and controlled by traffic lights. There would be a new bridge over the A2 for southbound traffic, east of the existing Bean overbridge, which would then be for northbound traffic.

There would be a new slip road on to the A2 eastbound.

At the Ebbsfleet Junction, it is proposed the junction broadly follows the existing road layout with enlarged roundabouts controlled by traffic lights.

The road between the roundabouts would be widened to be a dual carriageway, and the slip roads to the A2 would be widened.

The scheme has been backed by the Ebbsfleet Development Corporation, the firm behind the garden city project, who have backed £45m to the project.

Highways England claims the project will eventually improve journey times and increase the "capacity of the junctions to minimise the impact on the A2".

Another major project impacting Dartford Roads is the Lower Thames Crossing, which is not expected to be delivered until 2027.
