Bromley romantics will splash out £11.9 million on gifts, wining and dining and mini-breaks this Valentine's Day, according to a new survey.

The British Land survey found more than three quarters (80 per cent) of Bromley residents will celebrate Valentine's on Wednesday (February 14).

Nugent Shopping Centre in Orpington said they are preparing for a surge of visitors this weekend.

Tina Powley, centre manager at Nugent, said: “Valentine’s Day is a busy time for our retailers and restaurants as shoppers look to celebrate and treat their loved ones.

"With more than a third of residents likely to be celebrating the weekend prior to Valentine’s Day this year, we’re looking forward to spreading the love, whether that’s helping people choose the perfect gift or welcoming friends and couples for a romantic meal.”

The survey found that just 12 per cent of couples will have breakfast in bed on the most romantic day of the year with one in 10 people preferring to prepare an evening meal.

The most common gifts will be greeting cards (58 per cent), flowers (18 per cent) and chocolates (16 per cent).

Other halves won't be the only ones receiving presents with 10 per cent of mums, eight per cent of dads and 12 per cent of children also being treated.
