The community has rallied around a pensioner after she was beaten and robbed in Woolwich.

An 89-year-old woman was attacked near the clockhouse in Woolwich at 3pm on January 31.

The victim had just withdrawn £250 in savings when she was brutally thrown to the ground, punched and robbed by a male attacker.

She sustained bruising to her shoulder and head, and now the community has began to raise money to reimburse her.

Set up by the Neighbourhood Watch team, a Justgiving page has been launched to raise £200.

On the page, the team says: "The Neighbourhood Watch of the Woolwich Riverside Ward are collecting for her so that she might see and experience that as a community we do care about her.

"Show some community spirit and donate."

In less than a day the page has raised 324 per cent of its target - with strangers donating £650 to the cause.

One donor said: "There is more kindness around us than there is harm. Hope this helps you recover."

The money will be given to the victim through the Safer Neighbourhood police team.

The investigation into the attack is ongoing.
