Secondary schools in Greenwich have outperformed the national average when it comes to achievement.

The best performing schools in Greenwich based on GCSE results have been revealed after the latest government figures were released.

Attainment 8 is a new way of calculating pupil achievement.

It measures the achievement of a pupil across eight qualifications, with mathematics and English given extra weight.

In England the average attainment 8 score was 44.6 in 2017.

Greenwich secondary school topped this by scoring an average of 49.8.

Councillor Chris Kirby, Cabinet Member covering the Children and Young People portfolio, said: “We are proud that Royal Greenwich schools outperformed the national average in terms of attainment thanks to the achievements of many of our young people. We are also pleased that our schools are narrowing the gap for our most vulnerable.

“The highest performing schools in the borough will be encouraged to share their best practice regarding both attainment and progress so that other schools can learn from their success.”

St Ursula's Convent School was the best performing school in Greenwich, with a score of 60.2.

This was closely followed by St Thomas More Catholic Comprehensive School, with a score of 59.4.

Catrina Hamilton, headteacher of St Ursula’s Convent School, told News Shopper: “We are very proud of our results which places us in the top 10 per cent of schools nationally.

“This is the outcome of the incredible hard work and dedication of the staff and students here at our outstanding school.”
