It’s the age old question, should you get a dog just because your children persistently beg for one?

The Dogs Trust has got some advice for those who are unsure and what to expect when getting a family dog.

Firstly, they say the decision needs to be made by the whole family as everyone will need to chip in to look after the dog. You need to consider time, finances and the commitment needed to look after a dog for the average lifespan of 10 to 15 years.

You should also research the breed and size of the dog and where you want to get the dog from to ensure you are buying responsibly.

Then you need to decide if you have enough room for a big dog or if a smaller dog would suit you better. You will need to commit to walking it at least twice a day.

It is also important to take your dog and family to positive training classes to ensure your dog is sociable and well behaved.

The cost of a dog varies depending on how much you pamper your pooch, but the average cost of owning a dog for a year is £1,300, this includes all the essentials such as veterinary care, food, insurance, new toys and bedding.

Studies have shown that stroking your dog can lower your blood pressure and make you feel calmer. Another positive is teaching your children responsibility and commitment, which is always a good thing.

Please consider this before committing, it is a huge responsibility and one you can’t just put half your effort into.
