Greggs has a new hot food menu as the baker tries to compete with the big fast-food chains such as Mcdonald's and Burger King.

The high street chain, perhaps most famous for its sausage rolls and steak bakes, is trialling food that it hopes would appeal to an evening crowd if it sought to extend its opening times along with opening opening 100-plus new stores in the next year.

The new menu includes macaroni and cheese, southern fried chicken breast goujons and potato wedges.

They are available separately, or in a meal deal of any hot sandwich, wedges and drink from £4.50.

Greggs chief executive Roger Whiteside said: “We are testing a menu that will appeal in the evening, which is the part of the day when Greggs doesn’t trade.

“We need to find out if we can we sell hot food at the times we are already open.”

Greggs has reported a solid end to last year and said its classic favourites performed well in the final three months of 2017, while it also added Christmas specials such as its festive bake and fresh-baked mince pies.

Other options, such as hot sandwiches and gluten-free "balanced choice" soup have proved popular, with new drinks including a caramel latte added to the menu along with a focaccia-style pizza.
