It was 6am when a Dartford man had his wall torn down and the roof of his shed ripped away following a spiteful storm.

Kev Mayne, 59, had been downstairs having a cup of coffee. Three hours later he posted the damage of his home in Henderson Drive to Facebook.

The storm hit on Thursday night (January 18) and it inspired 75mph gusts to swipe across London.

He called his insurance company who told him the devastating news that he only had contents insurance.

Mr Mayne, who has lived the house all his life, now needs thousands of pounds to rebuild the home.

His friend of 12 years, Vanessa Rickets, set up the JustGiving page to help him out.

She told News Shopper: "His wife Kim, who tragically passed away four years ago, used to do everything in terms of finances.

"When Kev paid off the mortgage he didn't know about the building insurance. He was absolutely shocked. The council came and evoked a section 77 and said the house was a danger to the public."

Kev has remained in the house where his mother brought him up and where he lived with Kim.

He refuses to leave despite friends offering him a bed.

Over £3,700 has been raised since Vanessa set up the JustGiving page.

She said: "I would do the same for any of my mates. His motorbikes are the one thing that has given him life since Kim died but they were very badly damaged.

"He was absolutely gutted. He has nothing. He is the salt of the earth, such a lovely guy and life has dealt him with a tough hand. It was an easy mistake to make."

Vanessa is "blown away" from the response of the page so far and says people as far as Australia have donated what they can.

"We are looking to get the whole community to help," she added.

Director of ADM Skips arrived on site this morning (January 22) to witness the damage.

Within 30 minutes the company had a skip at the home.
