Plans to move Bromley Market further up the High Street have been submitted to the council.

The planning application includes an image of the proposed changes, which come as part of a council initiative to invest in Bromley town centre.

The plans

The number of stalls- 46- will not change.

Stalls at the new market will be set up mostly in single lines, instead of a double line of stalls which is how it is set up at the moment.

The stalls will be located on the pedestrianised area in front of 20 to 25 and 29 Market Square and in front of 109 to 111, 110 to 122, 124 to 126, 136 to 160, 162 to 184, 165 to 167 on the High Street.

The market will continue to operate on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 9am to 5pm.

The application includes potential seven days a week trading, but this is to allow for special events and bespoke markets.

A concerned business owner has submitted an objection on the application, saying he is “totally opposed” to the plans.

He owns a shop, which if the plans go ahead, would be right behind one of the stalls.

Anthony Nunas said: “Extending the market all the way up the High Street is also not a good idea for us as there are footwear stalls and clothing stalls which are cheaper than us because of how much rent and rates we have to pay.

“We are a small independent that has been in Bromley for 25 years I feel this is the last thing we need and would indeed be the final nail in our coffin to whether we survive or not.”

According to the council: “The proposed market relocation is a key element of the Council’s inward investment strategy for Bromley town centre.

“The relocation is required to allow the introduction of landscaping a new seating.

“The linear layout of the stalls and their locations are to ensure an adequate path for emergency vehicles.”

Bromley Market has been around for more than 800 years when it received its Royal Charter during the reign of King John.
