A café dedicated for people with dementia and their carers in Petts Wood will open for the first time next month.

‘St James the Great Memory Café’ will open on February 6 on Lakeswood Road in Petts Wood.

It will be open on the first and second Tuesday of each month from 2pm until 3.30pm.

One or the organisers, Sarah May, spoke to News Shopper about the inspiration behind it.

She said: “Here at St James we have become more aware of a growing need for support and understanding of dementia in the wider community.

“Care is something very important in our parish. This is why we want to reach out to the wider community. There is such a need for this.

“When the cafe opens a warm welcome will await our guests with dementia and their carers. It will be a time for refreshments and a chat in a safe and comfortable environment and if our guests so wish - the opportunity to join in with quizzes and music.

“However, we could not have done this without the support and encouragement of our Parish Priest Fr David Camilleri whose greatest desire is that we provide outreach and care to the wider community and this is just one of the facilities he wishes to provide.”
