London and the south east can expect high winds this week after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning.

The warning is for Wednesday night and into Thursday, with the potential for gusts of 60-70 mph and possibly up to 80mph in places.

The strongest winds are expected to transfer eastwards before clearing by early afternoon.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “There is a risk of severe gale force winds and heavy rain Wednesday night clearing Thursday. Brighter with isolated showers thereafter, although still breezy.”

Road, rail and ferry services may be affected with longer journey times and cancellations.

The Met Office has said that some bridges may close depending on the strength of the gusts as a precaution.

It also warns: "Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage. Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible, along with some damage to buildings."

The next couple of days in London and the south east also look set to be wet and windy.
