A ‘caring’ nine-year-old walked eleven miles to help his autistic brother who does not speak.

Jack Foster raised nearly £1,000 pounds by doing a walk from Bromley South Station to Victoria station.

The money has been given to Family Link, a charity that provides social activities and clubs for kids with disabilities. Jack’s little brother attends the charity.

Jack’s mum, Sam Watson, 43, of Saxon Road, Bromley, spoke about how Jack found his six-year-old brother Luke’s disability difficult at first.

She said: “When we told him that he might never talk, he did obviously find that difficult but its been a slow process, telling him over the years. But he understands it well now.”

Jack now has a special understanding of how to help Luke.

Ms Watson said: “Even though he’s young because he has always grown up with this and seen it evolve, he is very sensitive to Luke’s needs. He has a good understanding of his disability beyond his own years.

“He knows how difficult Luke finds it if we go to places that are busy.”

She said: “He’s my eyes and ears, he’ll call me if Luke is getting upset. Whatever is going on, he is tuned into his needs. Jack is very caring.”

Ms Watson said that Jack was determined to finish the charity walk as he had raise even though he struggled a little on the last section of the walk. He kept with a group of adult walkers.

The total raised for the charity walk, which took place on November 26, was over £2,000.

Ms Watson explained that Family Link gives her vital support to make sure Luke gets another stimulation. It also helps her spend more time with Jack.

But Family Link is struggling after having a cut in its funding.

Ms Watson said: “It is terrible for us, and there are so many families like us in the borough that have nowhere to go.

“This is work that should be provided by the borough because it is skilled work and these children are incredibly vulnerable. So, you can’t just give them to anyone to be looked after.

“I think the borough should be doing more, but that feeds into a bigger story of austerity and cuts and where this borough prioritises the money it wants to spend.”

Ms Watson said that she was very grateful for the work that Family Link does.

She said: “We are very grateful that there are people that do this work and create these charities because without them we would be stuck.”
