A nursery school has issued a warning to parents after two cases of meningitis were confirmed.

Little Angels Day Nursery in Vale Road, Northfleet, confirmed two children had become ill after contracting the infection.

Parents are being warned to look out for symptoms after the illness, which is most common in babies, children and young adults, was confirmed last week.

Owner Sugandree Chavda told News Shopper: "We are still open as normal. Two children have been diagnosed and we are in communication with Public Health England.

"The advice for parents is if your child has any illness, flu or a cough or a cold, take them to a GP. We're still open, and there is no need to panic."

The nursery's owner added there will be further information available to parents once PHE confirms test results.

According to the NHS, meningitis can be very serious if not treated quickly. It can cause life-threatening blood poisoning and result in permanent damage to the brain or nerves.

Symptoms of meningitis develop suddenly and can include:

A fever

Being sick

Headaches

A blotchy rash that doesn't fade when a glass is rolled over it (this won't always develop)

A stiff neck

A dislike of bright lights

Drowsiness or unresponsiveness

Seizures

Infections that cause meningitis can be spread through coughing, sneezing, kissing, and sharing utensils like cutlery.

You should get medical advice as soon as possible if you're concerned that you or your child could have meningitis.
