Concerned families demanding that Bromley Council creates a pedestrian crossing on a "dangerous" road in Beckenham may have finally had their voices heard after the council agreed to reassess the safety of the road.

More than 50 people staged a protest on Village Way, Beckenham, last week, where a motorcyclist was killed on November 10.

Campaigners include Lib Dem London Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon, who is deputy chairwoman of Greater London Assembly’s transport committee, and Rebecca Hickey, head teacher at nearby Harris Academy.

Despite other campaigns to improve pedestrian safety on Village Way, Bromley Council has never built a crossing, and previously concluded that, statistically, in terms of accidents, injuries and speeding, the road did not stand out as being dangerous.

However chairman of the council’s development control committee Peter Dean has now said that the road will be reassessed.

In an email to a campaigner, which was posted on Facebook, Cllr Dean said: "Following an analysis of the police and coronary reports the council will be reassessing road safety on Village Way potentially with a view to introduce traffic calming measures."

Campaigner Victoria Pointon said Year 7 children crossed the road in order to use the cut-through to nearby Harris Academy Beckenham, off Manor Way.

She said: “They wait until they’re in a big enough group before attempting to cross this wide busy road - they know it’s too dangerous to cross alone.”

Ms Hickey said: "We are also concerned about the safety of our students journeying to and from school as many have to cross Village Way.

“There are no adequate crossings available and, despite campaigns from our parents forum and staff members, we have not received support from the local authority for a safe crossing to be installed."

The Bromley Liberal Democrats are running a petition for the crossing which can be found here: http://www.bromleylibdems.org.uk/village_way_crossing.
