Criminals posing as police as part of courier fraud scam

Kent Police has received several reports of residents being approached by someone claiming to be a police officer who knocks at their front door.

They are then told that an investigation into rogue traders who completed work on their house has begun and the resident will be eligible for a refund.

In order to get this refund the victim would need to pay an outstanding bill and an officer would collect the payment so the funds can be released.

In one case, an elderly lady in Greenhithe was tricked into parting with £53,000 worth of Rolex's she had paid for in Bluewater. 

Another case involved a man in his 80s being scammed into going to London to buy watches. 

He bought one, but his bank cancelled the second transaction. Staff were concerned about the man's behaviour and called the police.  

Detective Sergeant Marc Cananur said: "Criminals who take part in this fraud pick out the most vulnerable members of society and we are keen to ensure people know how to spot the signs.

"Friends and family should pass on fraud prevention advice to help protect loved ones and prevent their finances being put at risk."

Posing as police officers isn't thing these scammers are doing.

Variations on the scam involve people claiming to be from Trading Standards, a local bank or other organisations in a position of trust.

A police spokesman said: "The police or your bank will never send a courier to your home to collect your bank card or other items and will never ask for cash, valuables, or your PIN.

"If you receive one of these calls end it immediately without providing information.

"If you wish to call your bank use a number known to you, not one provided by the caller. Call from another phone, or call a friend first to ensure the offenders have been disconnected from your line.

"If you’ve handed over any personal bank details to the fraudster, call your bank and cancel your cards immediately."
