The number of homes being built in Dartford rose by over a thousand in the last year, making it the most in Kent for new developments.

In new figures released by the government it shows that 1,162 new dwellings were added to Dartford's housing stock, compared to Maidstone which was the next closest with 1145.

In the 2011 census Dartford recorded a population of 97,000, and since then 4,439 new homes have been built.

Dartford, along with Tower Hamlets and the Vale of White Horse, have the the most additions per thousand houses of anywhere in the country.

Speaking about the new figures, Communities Secretary Sajid Javid said: "We owe it to our future generations to fix this broken housing market and help them find a home of their own.

"Whilst some councils are recognising their responsibilities and stepping up to meet the housing challenge, too many are still not acting."

Speaking recently about a new school in Dartford, council Leader Jeremy Kite stressed the importance of infrastructure in a borough with so much development.

He said: "With all the houses people say to us we need more infrastructure, schools hospital and police.

"This is showing them that we are doing that. I'm very pleased this will be a mixed development as well, with a mix leisure and sport and only a small amount of houses.

"It's a valuable land for development and it's pleasing we aren't just building houses."

Dartford was recently revealed to have more homeless people than anywhere in Kent.

In a report by Shelter, it was estimated that in Dartford there are nine rough sleepers and 642 total homeless people.

This means that one in every 164 people are affected by homelessness in Dartford, which is the worst in Kent, followed by Ashford.
