Ladies and gentlemen, Ebbsfleet United have a Mambo number five. Sort of.

Supporters of Ebbsfleet United have been calling for defender Yado Mambo to be given the number five shirt in homage of the one hit wonder by Lou Bega.

The 26-year-old has become something a cult figure after a match against Leyton Orient was shown on television last Saturday.

One spectator tweeted: “Imagine having a player called Mambo and not giving him the number five. Poor from Ebbsfleet.”

A social media storm followed that forced the club to take action and finally give the defender the number – all in the name of charity.

The club said: “It was something we noted six years ago on Yado’s debut but nonetheless, messages have poured in imploring us to swap our squad numbers around so that Mambo and number five can be united in perfect musical harmony.

“Alas, the number five currently belongs to our skipper Dave Winfield and he’s a pretty big chap. Try as we might to wrestle it out of his hands, it would take braver men than us to do that.”

The club will be auctioning an exclusive Mambo number five shirt, including a signed photo from the man himself, for Prostate Cancer UK.

One bidder has already got the ball rolling with a submission of £350, and at the time of writing the bidding was on £721.

Mambo No5 was originally recorded in 1949 by Dámaso Pérez Prado, and in 1999 Bega’s version went to number one in over 15 countries.
