The best part of school was always getting out the classroom and going on trips.

Upland Primary School in Bexleyheath has been announced as the winner of My Best School Trip after year five students were taken to the Outward Bound Centre in Cumbria.

The school won £1,500 towards another trip, and were presented with their award by BBC journalist Fiona Bruce.

Upland's teacher, Alex Langley, said: "We were really surprised and overwhelmed to win. It validates everything we believe in at the school, it’ all about the pupils’ resilience and determination and they proved that on the trip. It’s so important to have that honoured and it feels wonderful because it shows that the children can work together in a team."

Upland Primary School’s entry was selected for the shortlist from hundreds of applications from schools across the country.

Speaking about their trip, Uplands pupil James, 10, said: "We had to do a six mile hike, which was tiring and long, but with the encouragement of teammates we got through it. I enjoyed every second of my experience and I will never forget it.”

One of the judges, Gill Harvey, CEO of the School Travel Forum said: “Our winner was a great example of the benefits of taking a holistic view of planning and running a school trip.

"Not only were the actual outdoor physical tasks important for the children, helping to challenge and grow their confidence, but there was also time built in for them to self-reflect, appreciate their surroundings and enjoy nature.”
