Two teenagers from the Bromley borough will be the evil henchmen of the Wicked Witch in a pantomime production of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Kitty Mason, 18, and Georgina Williams, 19, play the lead Flying Monkeys in the Downsview Players’ production which is marking the 95th anniversary of Judy Garland’s birth.

The Hollywood great who played Dorothy in the blockbuster 1939 film is admired by many in the Downsview Players who are based at Downsview Church, Waddington Way, Crystal Palace.

The Players have joined forces with the 2nd Thornton Heath Girls’ Brigade and 5th Croydon Boys’ Brigade to put on the pantomime, which is written by Andrew Winfield.

Former Hayes Secondary School pupil Kitty, who acted in two of their productions, Les Miserables and UrineTown, said she was enjoying taking part in her first pantomime.

Kitty said: “I’ve really enjoyed playing one of the flying monkeys because you can play around with their character and choose a particular voice to fit the part. I’ve played serious parts in previous plays so it’s been fun to take on a comedy role.”

Girls’ Brigade Leader Georgina, who studied fine art at Bishop Justus C of E School’s sixth form, has divided her time between rehearsing with Kitty and the rest of the cast, and painting the scenery.

Georgina, from Bromley, said: “It’s been fun having my first speaking part in a play although it’s been a bit challenging.”

The pantomime sees Dorothy (Michelle Spencer-Child) and her companions – her pet dog Toto (Simon Charles), Scarecrow (Michele Charles), Tin Man (Simon Peyton), Lion (Sharon Lakin) and Good Witch Betty (Terry Fuller) – beat the Wicked Witch (Steve Canning) so that she can leave Oz and return home.

Director Anne Bassi, from Crystal Palace, said: “Judy Garland was so iconic that we wanted to put on this pantomime as a tribute to her during what would have been her 95th birthday year.

“Everyone has worked so hard during rehearsals and the set and costumes look fantastic. I hope Judy and the rest of the original cast would be proud of our tribute to them.”

Tickets, costing £7 for adults and £4.50 for children, are available for Thursday 23 and Friday 24 November, starting at 7.30pm, and at 7pm on Saturday 25 November from www.downsviewplayers.co.uk.
