Increasing the amount of affordable housing and creating secure jobs are amongst the plans to tackle poverty in Lewisham.
These are all part of the Lewisham Poverty Commission’s latest report on the “tens of thousands” of residents in Lewisham who live in poverty.
The report suggests a raft of improvements and recommendations for the council to tackle the poverty problem in the borough.
On top of more housing and secure jobs, other recommendations includes more adult educations services, especially for young or single parents to tackle child poverty.
Councillor Joe Dromey, cabinet member for policy and performance, and chair of the Lewisham Poverty Commission, said: “Lewisham is a great place to live. But despite being situated in the heart of London, one of the wealthiest cities in the world, tens of thousands of our residents live in poverty.
“Lewisham has a proud record of tackling poverty, but there is much more we can do. Despite the Government's decision to cut two thirds of our funding, we are determined to make a big difference locally.”
