Southeastern has announced a short term timetable change to deal with leaf falls.

The train service has announced a different timetable to deal with slippery rails and high levels of leaves on the tracks meaning that trains will not stop at some stations.

A spokesman for the franchise said: "Conditions are expected to be particularly challenging from today until Friday October 27. Southeastern will be running a revised timetable on these days, particularly during off-peak periods.

"You wouldn’t think the humble leaf could cause so much trouble. Thousands of tonnes of leaves fall onto wet train tracks every autumn. These can form a smooth and slippery layer of mucky mulch on the rails.

"Our trains then find it harder to grip the track and brake. This also confuses the signals, which rely on electric currents in the track to work out where the trains are."

Travellers should use the National Rail Enquiries Journey Planner to check journeys before travel.

The planner is not currently showing details for Wednesday October 25 onwards. This will updated today.
