A new study has revealed the true horrors of the UK’s pothole problem.

A freedom of information request by Confused.com revealed a total 1,031,787 potholes were reported in 2016 across the UK.

The study shows that if you were to combine the depth of every single pothole in London it would measure more than eight times the depth of the English Channel.

The UK’s potholes combined would be more than 40km deep, four times the depth of the Pacific Ocean.

To understand this better, Confused.com has put together a scrolling animation that puts these depths into perspectives using different landmarks.

Amanda Stretton, motoring editor at Confused.com, says: “Scrolling to depths of 40km really puts the UK’s pothole problem into perspective.

“They are a major bugbear among drivers, not least because of the damage they do to our vehicles – around £3.1 million worth of damage.”

In 2016, councils in London forked out almost £8,000,000 to repair potholes and almost £100,000 in compensation to those who had their car damaged.

Ms Stretton added: “The cost of motoring alone is getting more and more expensive and damage repairs is a big contributor to this, as car parts increase in price as well.”

As the cold weather sets in this puts the pothole problem into perspective and the results show that more needs to be done to fix this problem.
