A north Kent Sunday league football team who try to "play like Barcelona" have taken unusual steps to boost attendance at their next match.

To rally support for a top-of-the-table clash on Sunday against Swanscombe Reserves, the New Ash Green III squad donned balaclavas and stuck posters up all over their village.

The team are undefeated this season despite having an average age of just 19 but attendances have been in the single figures.

They have been unable to celebrate their victories so far in true Sunday league fashion - as the majority of them are not able to take advantage of the free booze laid on by their club afterwards.

Midfielder and captain James Belsey is the team's veteran player at 33 years old.

He said: "Lads work in the cafe, a few in the Co-Op. We are unbeaten, mainly kids playing men but our crowd is mostly just mums and their dogs.

"We have a proper top-of-the-table clash on Sunday and after last night's stunt we are aiming for a crowd of ten."

Crowds can expect goals from the side, with top scorer James Howard, who is just 17, already netting 19 goals in three games.

Mr Belsey said that following their publicity push he woke up to 117 text messages about this Sunday's match.

He said: "I designed the posters. We want to give Swanscombe a good game. We have to play like Barcelona, tika taka style because we're a bunch of pipsqueaks. I'm the oldest and I'm just 33 and five foot eight.

"They're one above us in the table because they have played one more game than us. Because of the ages, we can only celebrate with sausage rolls."

Members of the thirds went out last night to promote their big game.

If you fancy getting behind New Ash Green this weekend, the game is at 10.45am on Sunday at New Ash Green Sports Pavillion.
