Bexley Council has been praised for its food hygiene enforcement record as it has been deemed the most improved in the country.

National consumer organisation Which? praised the changes made by the council in 2015 which improved raised standards of food hygiene in Bexley.

News Shopper has seen copies of inspector reports of the worst rated establishments, including this report which found flies in the kitchen of a chicken shop in Bexleyheath.

Changes made by the council included hiring more staff and increasing inspections.

Council officers visit approximately 1,000 food establishments a year. Those that don't meet the standard and have a score below three face enforcement action including closure and fines.

Another report seen by News Shopper exposed a restaurant storing unnamed meat with no date on it in a cold room.

Restaurants and takeaways should display their food hygiene score in their window.

Cabinet member for community safety, environment and leisure, Councillor Peter Craske said: “Residents across Bexley can eat out with confidence because of the hard work of our food inspection team.

"This Which? report rightly recognises the importance of this issue. To be number one in London is testament both to our staff and the restaurants and cafes across Bexley who work to maintain very high standards.”

Bexley food businesses are now among the highest rated for food hygiene in London.
