A shoplifter who threatened to stab a supermarket employee with scissors as he tried to steal beer and lamb has been jailed for four years.

Clive Pullen warned a security guard "you're not going to like how this ends" after he was challenged in Asda in London Road, Swanley, on January 24.

Pullen, of Bourne Way, Swanley, tried to steal eight cans of beer and three legs of lamb after entering the shop at 5.50am.

When challenged by staff, the shoplifter pulled out a pair of scissors and threatened to stab a member of security. He then left the store with the stolen booze and meat.

The 37-year-old was identified by police after an officer recognised him from a CCTV image.

He was arrested on January 31 and when searched a pair of scissors was found in his trouser pocket.

Detective Constable Asa Buckland, of Kent Police, said: "Pullen’s actions led staff to believe that any attempts to stop him leaving the store would be met with a violent response.

"Regardless of his intentions, shoplifting is never a victimless crime as the cost is always passed on to other shoppers.

"This offence was aggravated by the presence of a weapon and the court has demonstrated the significant consequences which await those who pursue this course of action."

Pullen was found guilty of robbery after a trial at Maidstone Crown Court.

He admitted two counts of possessing a bladed article.
