It's true what they say - one person's trash is another person's treasure.

Bexley residents have raised £7,500 for charities through the council's recycling scheme.

Evergreen Bexley, Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice, Trees for Cities, Bexley Mooring Projects and Friends of the Shuttle all received a share of the £7,500 donation at the Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice in Abbey Wood on Friday, September 15.

The scheme is under London Green Points and rewards residents for recycling with prizes, discounts at businesses in the borough and donations to charity.

Barnehurst is the leading community for recycling, and residents there voted for Greenwich and Bexley7 Community Hospice to receive the top prize of £3,500. Evergreen Bexley got the second prize of £2,000.

Kate Heaps, chief executive at Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice said: “It’s great news to hear that we have been voted favourite local charity by members of London Green Points - Bexley. The prize of £3,500 will be put to really good use to help us support people living with terminal illness in the Bexley borough. The recycling scheme also fits really well with our Hospice strategy, to reduce waste and to support our local communities to reduce landfill by supporting our shops.”

London Green Points launched in Bexley in September 2011 and has been rolled out to 95,000 properties and has over 110 participating businesses offering discounts and offers to its members.

Cllr Peter Craske, Bexley’s cabinet member for community safety, environment and leisure said: “We cannot thank our residents enough for their continual efforts to recycle as much as possible and reduce waste. Not only has this helped Bexley to firmly hold its position as the top London borough for recycling, it’s also raising much needed funds for local charities through London Green Points."
