A petition to save Bexleyheath police station has had the backing of hundreds of people.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has put forward a consultation that proposes cutting front-counter services to fund frontline improvements.

According to the consultation, the Met faces £400m of cuts by 2021 as a result of the Government’s "failure to properly fund the police service".

However, a petition started by Bexley Safer Neighbourhood Board said moving services to Sidcup will restrict access for residents.

The petition reads: "Bexleyheath police station is central to the entire borough with superb public transport links to all locations. Travelling to Sidcup by public transport is challenging.

"There is a very limited bus service to Marlowe House and parking facilities are both limited and costly.

"The proposed new location would therefore make using the front-office extremely difficult, especially for people living in the north of the borough."

The proposals put forward by Mr Khan claim £170 million capital would be raised from closing counters that could be used to free up officers to spend more time on the frontline.

Mr Khan’s proposals would include selling off Bexleyheath station, where the 24/7 front counter is, and moving the service to Marlowe House, which is currently used as a daytime facility.

So far, more than 800 people have signed the petition towards a 1,000-signature goal.

One message left on the petition said: "Bexleyheath police station is the prime police office in the borough, it's in a good position and needs to be saved with its full public facilities."

Another stated: "Utterly ridiculous that they would even consider closing Bexleyheath police station, we are already suffering with numerous other local front offices having been closed."

The consultation on the proposed changes is open to the public until October 6 and can be accessed online here.
