A Brockley organic bakery who deliver all their bread on bikes are crowdfunding to raise money to replace their “unreliable, inconsistent” oven.

Cooper’s Bakehouse in Dragonfly Place are aiming raise £10,000 towards the cost of switching their 20 year old oven for a new model.

They pride themselves on being a “properly local business” and say their bread travels a maximum of three miles to homes, shops and cafes in the area.

The crowdfunding post said: “At the heart of our bakery is a much loved but struggling old oven.

“He's known to us as Greg, named in recognition of his previous life on the high street. Greg is unreliable, inconsistent and at 20 years old, he's in need of replacement.

“We want to raise £10,000 towards the cost of a modern oven with a long and reliable future.”

The oven will cost £34,000 in total and the team plan to borrow £26,000 to make up the difference after raising £10,000.

They began as a bakery in a back garden five years ago and now they bake 1000 loaves a week and employ nine members of staff.

The post continued: “Cooper's Bakehouse does things the old fashioned way, we use organic ingredients, we shape and bake by hand and we deliver by bicycle.

“It's not the cheapest way to supply bread but it ensures wonderful flavour and that we'll always be focused on our local customers and our environment.”

More than £5000 has been raised so far and there are five days left to support the project.

People who back the project will receive “rewards” for their support.

The rewards include baking classes, break delivery and tickets to the Oven Warming Party.
