Lewisham Fire Cadets have been praised by MP Heidi Alexander and Councillor Alan Hall at a passing out drill and ceremony.

Ms Alexander and Cllr Hall both attended the event in the Lee Green Fire Station on Eltham Road yesterday (July 27).

As part of their ceremony cadets between the ages of 14 and 17 put on an impressive display by rushing out of a fire truck and spraying a building with hoses.

The cadets have been awarded a BTEC Level 2 in Fire and Rescue Services in the Community.

Ms Alexander said: “It was a genuine privilege to attend the passing out ceremony of the Lewisham Fire Cadets.

“The scheme clearly equips young people with a range of new skills and it was great to hear some of them speak with such confidence and passion about how it has changed their lives.

“The tragedy at Grenfell should make us all reflect on the hugely important job we ask public servants in the Fire Brigade to do.

“It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm and energy of the next generation to be part of the Fire Service and our thanks should go to everyone who has made the scheme possible.”

Councillor Alan Hall said: "I am particularly pleased as I asked the London Fire Brigade if they could establish a fire cadet unit in Lewisham which is now one of 16 units across London.

“The cadets receive a qualification and valuable skills for life and these young people are a credit to their families, our borough and the London Fire Brigade. It really does make you proud.”
