Woolwich Foot Tunnel will soon be officially open to cyclists as Greenwich Council started to process of updating the bye-laws.
At a meeting of the full council on July 19, they agreed to amend the bye-laws that allows cyclists to use the tunnels that right now is technically illegal.
Cyclists use the tunnel frequently right now and as the bye-laws haven’t been updated since the Second World War, the fine for cycling is still set to £1.
Now the new bye-laws need to be approved by Newham and Tower Hamlets councils and finally by the Secretary of State.
Councillor Sizwe James, cabinet member for transport, economy and smart cities, said: “The foot tunnels are a brilliant and well-used way for people being able to travel easily, and at no cost, back and forth across the river to get to and from work.
“They are also a visitor attraction in their own right. The changes proposed will bring the bye-laws into the 21st century and support effective management of the foot tunnels.”
