Patient numbers soared at a Dartford A&E this week - leading the hospital to issue advice to patients to look elsewhere for help.

Darent Valley Hospital’s A&E usually sees around 300 attendees on a Monday, however this week numbers rocketed to 360.

A further 104 patients visited Gravesend’s Minor Injuries Unit when the average is 65.

Darent Valley had the NHS’s second highest pressure rating over winter, an OPEL 3 alert that showed major pressures compromising patient flow.

The hospital is classed as a “small hospital” because it has under 500 beds, with a total of 473.

A spokesman for the hospital said: “Many of the people that attended the A&E could have been seen far faster and more appropriately by their GP, at a walk-in-centre or at a minor injuries unit.

“When people present at the A&E, staff are now redirecting them to the right place suitable for the level of care they need.

“At this time of year please think carefully about looking after yourself and check in on elderly friends and relatives.

“Most of all, wear appropriate clothing or skin protection and stay well hydrated in the warm weather.

“We would like to thank the people who have used the most appropriate services for non-urgent care rather than coming to the A&E. It is greatly appreciated by the hospital.”
