Internet problems at Greenwich Council shut down a lot of council-run operations after a Virgin fibre wire broke.

Virgin Media confirmed one of the wires broke in Croydon today (July 7), which resulted in multiple councils being unable to process payments.

Greenwich, Lewisham and Richmond Council all saw their websites go down.

Paying your council tax was impossible as are any kind of payments you need to make to the council.

The council’s tweeted at 9am today: “The Royal Borough of Greenwich website is currently unavailable but we’re working to get it fixed asap. Apologies for inconvenience.”

If you called to pay council tax in Greenwich, a voice said: “We are currently unable to take payments. We are working with our suppliers to resolve this issue as soon as possible.”

Virgin Media said the problem has been fixed and local London Borough Councils have had their internet restored.

A Virgin Media spokesperson said: “Following a fibre break this morning, which caused a temporary loss of service for some of our business customers in London, we can now confirm that services have been restored to the Borough Councils. We apologise to those who were affected.”
