Dartford Council has approved a major revamp of the Civic Centre.

At a cabinet meeting last Thursday councillors agreed that the Civic Centre, where the council chambers are, is in need of a makeover.

Councillors passed proposals that will see more than £600,000 worth of work done to the building.

The council have been located in the Civic Centre for 32 years and, according to the report submitted to the cabinet, there has been no investment into the structure within the building other than routine repairs.

The report said: “Works are now needed to the Civic Centre building to improve working conditions and provide modern efficient systems which in turn, will reduce future running costs.”

At a budget meeting in February it was agreed that a total budget of £678,000 would be set aside for the works.

Works to be carried out to the Council building include a full asbestos survey and removal, a new air conditioning plant in the Council chamber and new lighting across some of the floors.

The report states that the hot water system within the building is over 40 years old.

There will also be a new entrance installed to the lobby area, new heating and boilers, and a replacement of IT switches.

Budgets estimate the works will total £645,000 with an additional £33,000 set aside for fees.

A council spokesman told the News Shopper: “The next step is to progress the appointment of contractors required to deliver the proposed works.”
