A leisure centre in Dartford may receive funding for further expansion after a multi-million refurbishment has caused a spur on people wanting to sign up.

Following a major refurbishment programme, Fairfield Leisure Centre re-opened to the public in 2016.

Visitor numbers have grown in excess of 440,000 in the past year and is now working at nearly maximum capacity.

In a report being submitted to Dartford Council’s cabinet on Thursday it shows that Fairfield needs further expansion.

The report reads: “Although customer feedback has been generally positive, there have been a number of complaints around the provision of changing and shower cubicles as well as the lack of car parking capacity.”

Fairfield received a £12m refurbishment from Dartford Council which introduced a six-lane swimming pool, a 95 station gym, a sauna and a café.

Memberships have nearly hit the maximum capacity of 3,300 and it is anticipated that demand will continue to increase.

It is proposed that word to the car park will be paid for by the Council with Places for People Leisure repaying 1/25th costs to the council until the end of their contract.

Changes to the shower and changing cubicles are proposed to be funded by the council at a further cost of £33,000.

The proposal reads: “Customers would now like to see privacy cubicles for showers in the male, female, pool and fitness changing rooms.

“They would also like to see more privacy cubicles for changing in all areas of the pool changing rooms, particularly for families.”

Under the proposals there will be additional changing cubicles and new family changing rooms.

The proposals will see car parking increased to 155 and increased gym space for 300 new members.

A decision will be made on Thursday, June 29.
