A prison officer from HMP/YOI Isis won a Prison Officer of the Year award for her efforts in rehabilitating prisoners.

Kissie Goodwin was nominated by her line manager for the Change and Innovation Award for her work in improving the prison’s rehabilitative culture and for creating an environment which reduces the risk of reoffending by supporting prisoners.

Emily Thomas, Governor of Isis prison in Greenwich, applauded Ms Goodwin’s determination.

She said: “Kissie has illustrated an innovative and creative nature with many great ideas but also the ability to deliver on them.

“She is brilliant at facilitating delivery with external partners, re-energising existing delivery as well as working as part of a team.

“Kissie demonstrates how one individual can genuinely embody a rehabilitative culture and with the power of their enthusiasm bring it to life in a prison.”

The award recognises individuals who come up with original or inventive ways of improving the chances of rehabilitation for people in custody.

As part of the Reducing Reoffending team at Isis prison, Ms Goodwin has worked with education providers to ensure that prisoners have all the skills necessary to turn their backs on crime when they are released.

Prisons and Probation Minister Sam Gyimah congratulated her for her success.

He said: “I want to congratulate Kissie for her dedication to Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service.

“It is vital that we celebrate the committed staff in the Prison and Probation service who on a daily basis go above and beyond to help reduce the risk of reoffending and to work in what can be a challenging but ultimately rewarding environment.”
