A Crossrail extension, improvements to train services, more river crossings, more buses to hospitals, and provisions for electric cars are amongst the many demands Bexley Council have submitted to TfL.

At a presentation members of the council gave Transport for London, the team from Bexley laid out why they believe the borough should receive far more investment than they currently get.

The council claim they have one of the lowest funding allocations in London, and that their funds are also dropping faster than most other boroughs.

The Local Implementation Plans (LIP) for Bexley, the money allocated to London boroughs through TfL, is the 6th lowest in London.

On top of that, the reduction in LIP Bexley has received for 2017/18 is the 5th highest in London, according to the council.

Now Bexley Council wants more investment for numerous ideas they have to improvement transport links in the borough.

One of their largest requests is an extension of the Crossrail Elizabeth Line across the north of the borough.

Currently the line, which will fully open in 2019, will stop at Abbey Wood after its penultimate stop at Woolwich, but the council want the line to continue further than that.

Let by council leader Teresa O’Neill, the team also requested new river crossings into Bexley, saying these would be central to plans to develop 31,000 new homes and create 17,500 new jobs in the borough.

The Council’s presentation set out the need for investment to improve transport links in and around Erith too, as well as the case for improvements to train services, bus services and the local cycle network.

It also covered the need for better bus services to local hospitals, the need for more capacity for schoolchildren at peak times, maintenance of the A2 and A20 and provision for electric cars.

Cllr O’Neill said: “The meeting was very positive and built on the excellent relationships we are developing with Mike and his team.

“Improving transport connections and services is a priority for our residents and businesses and at the heart of our plans for the future.”
