A Bromley woman has come up with a novel way for mothers to cherish that special bond with their children.

Deborah Towers, who runs her own online store, designs breast milk jewellery by preserving the milk sent in to her by customers that is then converted into memorable keepsakes.

The mother-of-two described the process as ‘heart-warming’ as she was originally encouraged by close family members and friends to start producing the wonderful mementos.

After it has been made into a paste, the milk is then moulded into one of a variety of shapes, such as pearls, Swarovski crystals and gemstones, before being encased permanently in resin, her website says.

When it has been left to cure properly over five days, fixtures are then added for it to be turned into a bracelet or pendant.

Deborah was inspired by mothers wanting pieces for them to ‘celebrate and remember’ bonds they had when breastfeeding their newborn children.

Although the breast milk jewellery business began roughly a month ago, Deborah has been designing and selling jewellery for nearly a decade.

She said: “It is important to me to make these for mothers because to see them so close with their child, and with such a special bond, really warms my heart.

“It is so important [to me], and something which I lacked when I was young.”

As a baby, Deborah was given up for adoption and later raised by Catholic parents on Sandringham Road in Bromley.

She was later put into a children’s home at around 13 years old in Orpington before being made to leave at 16 because she had grown too old to stay.

Despite a very tough upbringing and working in several hapless jobs, it was advice from others that helped her realise her potential.

Ms Towers said: “I spent my whole life thinking that I was incapable and would never amount to much until I taught myself personal development, and learned how to value both myself and my life.

“Now I remain happy no matter what circumstances I find myself in.”

With her work being warmly received, she has received countless thank you cards and some stories which have ‘brought her to tears’.

According to others, she is known as the most positive person that they know and have ever met.

Deborah hopes her jewellery means that mothers’ memories are always close to them wherever they go.
