The family of a Bexley police officer who was stabbed during the terrible events at London Bridge have spoken out about his bravery.
PC Charlie Guenigault, from Bexley, was off duty when he was stabbed four times as he protected others.
In total, 17 people have been arrested and five remain in custody.
In a statement issued by the Metropolitan Police, Charlie's family said they were proud of the officer's immense bravery.
The family said: "Our family has received numerous messages from friends, colleagues and people around the country sending Charlie good wishes and commending him for his actions.
"We are very grateful for this and it has provided us with a lot of comfort at this difficult time.
"Given the opportunity again, Charlie would no doubt do exactly the same if faced with the same situation; helping a fellow police officer in need and protecting the public.
"He is immensely proud to work for the Metropolitan Police Service and serving the Southwark community, and this is an example of that.
"Charlie is described by his peers as a dedicated police officer, who is a diligent, hardworking and respected member of his team."
A crowdfunding page has been set up to support Charlie and has raised more than £4,000 twoards a £6,000 goal.
Writing on the Justgiving page, Keeley Jenner said: “On Saturday, terrorist hit London again. PC Charlie Guenigault was off duty and heading home when the incident happened.
“Charlie went to the aid of the BTP officer who was also being attacked and with no thought for his own safety tried to protect him. Charlie suffered serious injuries and was stabbed four times leaving him in a critical condition.”
The money has been donated by more than 200 supporters.
Keeley said on the page: “As a team we are incredibly proud of him and would like to be able to do something for him to assist in his recovery.
“Charlie is a true hero.”
