A nightclub in Bexleyheath is putting on a monthly event exclusively for people with learning difficulties.

Nyne Bar in Bexleyheath Broadway is expecting a big turnout for this month’s Shine event, a club night designed exclusively for adults with learning disabilities such as autism and Asperger’s.

A spokesman for Nyne said the event has been running for a few months, but has started to gain traction because there is nothing else like it in the area.

The spokesman said: “It was an event created because we thought it would be something good for the community, a safe environment for 18+ adults with learning difficulties to enjoy a night out in a safe and relaxed atmosphere.

“It has gained some traction since we started it back in February, it's great to see adults who wouldn't necessarily venture to bar or club being able to relax and enjoy themselves, most have returned monthly.

“Allot of the credit goes to Helen Sharp who is incredibly committed to helping us set it up and improving opportunities to anyone with learning disabilities in general.”

Helen Sharp, organiser of Shine, said the event has more than 100 visitors.

She said: "We are wheelchair accessible and we have people from care homes come with their clients or people come with their parents. I used to run an event in Dartford and started this one in February, it is building up.

"My son has special needs and it something I get pleasure from helping out with and promoting."

Shine is on the second Tuesday of every month.

The spokesman for Nyne added: “We can't take all the credit, we heard about another venue doing it in another area and we just thought our community needed something like that.

“We believe everyone attending gets allot out of it in many ways. This month is looking especially busy as there has been interest from other schools and carers from other boroughs, it appears there's allot more people who can benefit and not just locally.

“We started it for our community but if others want to join the fun, then why not!”
