A man has been freed from a car after a "major" crash involving a police car in Swanley.

Three fire engines and a fire and rescue unit attended the scene in Maidstone Road, Swanley at about 2pm this afternoon.

A spokesman for London Fire and Rescue said: "We were called to a road traffic collision between two cars.

"One man was trapped by the nature of his injuries and he had to be released from the vehicle."

A spokesman also confirmed that a police car was involved in the crash.

The man was passed into the care of the London Ambulance Service.

A spokesman said: "We were called today at 1.47pm to reports of a road traffic collision on Maidstone Road.

"We sent an ambulance crew to the scene and are still currently at the scene."

A witness said the road was shut because of the "major road traffic accident outside BMW."

Police confirmed that police car was involved.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "At approximately 13:45hrs on Thursday, 25 May a marked police vehicle that was responding to an emergency call collided with a second vehicle on Maidstone Road in Bexley.

"Lights and sirens were in use."

The spokesman added that one police officer sustained minor injuries.

Officers from the Roads and Transport Policing Command are investigating and the Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed.
