Dog food laced with 'rat poison' has left two dogs needing medical care and vets urging owners to remain vigilant.

Yesterday, two dogs were rushed to Park View Veterinary Group in Welling after consuming dog food in Russell Park, in Long Lane, Bexleyheath.

It is reported that the dogs ate food left at the park that had rat poison pushed into it.

Lorraine Lebeau, who works at Park View, said it was lucky the dogs owners noticed the food.

She said: "This is the first in recent times this has happened. The dogs could have died if their owner didn't noticed what they had eaten and bring it here.

"We are urging dog owners to be vigilant. There was a blue rat poison pellet in the food and chocolate scattered around it to entice the dogs in.

"It is evil."

The food was soft nuggets with blue pills inside.

Bexley council are investigating what happened.

A spokesman for the council said: "We have been contacted about this horrible incident and have passed the information to the police.

"The site was inspected yesterday and will be inspected again today for any other signs of baited dog food.

"We would encourage dog owners to be vigilant while they are walking their pets and if they see anything suspicious report it to the police."

In a post on Facebook the Vets confirmed the dogs were ok and currently receiving treatment at the practice.
