A woman who was told she would never walk again has taken on a challenge to show she can prove the doctors wrong whilst raising money for an amazing cause.

Marina Narayan, 51, had a fall in her home in 2015 that left her with a spinal cord injury and paralysis from the waist down.

At a rehabilitation session at Neurokinex in Crawley, Marina saw a poster for a charity walk being organised by Reigate resident Kate Thornton-Jones for her four-year-old son Jasper who is also receiving treatment there.

Marina said the challenge, which was on Saturday May 20, was not about her, but about “little darling” Jasper.

She said: “It was hard but I was determined. I set myself challenges and I go out to smash them. It was the furthest I have walked.

“It really was amazing, I had all my family there to support. I only decided the week before to sign up, so I really did not have time to think about it.”

Marina uses sticks or a wheelchair day to day, so this was the first time she had taken on a challenge like this.

An able-bodied person would be able to cover the 2.5KM distance in around half an hour but Marina expected it to take between two and three.

She said: “It took one hour and 39 minutes, which everyone was really pleased with.

“The last time I looked I had raised over £1,200 for Jasper which is just great.”

Jasper caught hand, foot and mouth virus that escalated and attacked vital organs.

Just after Christmas 2014 his heart stopped and whilst on life support he suffered a spinal stroke which left him with paralysis in his legs.

Marina saw Jasper on television and decided that even though she would have not long ago though twice about walking to the end of her road, she would take on the 2.5km.

Marina, from Joydens Wood, said: “Neurokinex have been amazing in giving the support I need.

“I just want to show others that this isn’t the end, and that there is help out there to do things like this.”
