Police have formally started investigating the death of Sian Hollands in Dartford after an inquest slammed her treatment at Darent Valley Hospital.

A spokesman for Kent Police today said an investigation has begun.

He said: “Kent Police is making initial enquiries on whether any criminal offences have taken place following the death of a 25-year-old woman at Darent Valley Hospital on 15 November 2015. The request to do this was made on 11 April 2017.

“Officers are in the process of collating information to establish whether any criminal offences have taken place.”

Sian Hollands, from Priory Hill in Dartford, died on November 15, 2015, from a pulmonary embolism.

She was taken to hospital the day before where, according to her family, she was “judged, labelled and ignored” by the doctors.

Speaking earlier this month, a coroner ruled that the 25-year-old mother-of-three death was due to the doctors’ failures.

In the coroner's final statement, the inquest heard: "The death of Sian Hollands was due to the failures of the doctors at Darent Valley Hospital to examine, diagnose and treat her for pulmonary embolism following her admission to hospital.

"Had they done so, on the balance of probability she would not have died."

A statement given at the time on behalf of the family said: “Sian was a loved young woman in her prime who leaves behind three young children who struggle every day without their mummy. The family hopes that no other family will have to walk in their shoes.”

A spokesman for Darent Valley said they have looked at how the emergency department operates.

A spokesman for the Gravesham and Dartford NHS Trust said:“We continue to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Sian Hollands.

"We apologise to the family that Sian did not receive the level of care that she was entitled to expect when she came into A&E in November 2015.

“We have looked closely at our procedures in the emergency department and produced a detailed action plan to help prevent this type of serious incident from happening again.”
